Welcome

In 1980, following the establishment of the International Society of Appraisers in 1979, a group of local appraisers formed the National Capital Area Chapter of the International Society of Appraisers (ISANCAC). This was done to address the need for knowledgeable and professional appraisers in the Washington-Baltimore area.

Since its formation, the ISANCAC has distinguished itself as an important participant in local and national activities, for example, by hosting the national conference and winning the ISA outstanding chapter of year award three times. NCAC members have been active at the national level of ISA, holding positions on the Board of Directors, serving as national officers, including President, chairing numerous committees and as recipients of national awards. Many of our members are published authors.

Our presenter will be Ryan N. Berley and the topic will be about Trench Art of World War I

Below is Ryan's bio...

Ryan Berley is a native of Media, Pennsylvania, his parents having been married at the Old Mill in Rose Valley. When the family wasn't traveling the country visiting antique markets and museums, they were living above their antiques shop on Baltimore Avenue, The Saturday Evening Experience. Ryan graduated from Washington & Jefferson College with dual degree in History and Entrepreneurship. Following college, he worked as an auction specialist at Samuel T. Freeman & Company, heading the 20th Century Design Department for 5+ years. In 2004, Ryan and his brother Eric opened The Franklin Fountain, a turn-of-the-century soda fountain ice cream parlor in Old City, Philadelphia that has received international acclaim. In 2011, the Berley Brothers purchased and preserved nearby Shane Confectionery, the oldest candy shop in America and continue to hand-craft sweets onsite in the old world tradition. They have been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, Food & Wine and received preservation awards for their work. Ryan has curated and lectured on craftsmanship, history, base-ball and confectionery at local and international institutions.

Since 2015, Ryan has been a board member of the Rose Valley Museum & Historical Society. Since its opening in 2017 he has been Curator of the Rose Valley Museum at Thunderbird Lodge, a 1904 masterwork of architect William L. Price. He has traveled to Arts & Crafts sites in England, Europe and the United States and attended a variety of Arts & Crafts conferences. In February of 2020, Ryan was a speaker at the 33rd Annual Arts & Crafts Conference in Asheville, North Carolina where he exhibited and lectured on “Trench Arts & Crafts in World War One.”

Ryan and his partner Lizzie Reed live in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania and are members of the Darby Friends Meeting.

ISA-NCAC December 2020 Monthly Meeting

Time: Monday Dec 21, 2020 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Please see below for information on attending ZOOM meetings.

NCAC ISA chapter meeting 5/4/2020

NCAC is inviting you to our first scheduled Zoom meeting.

This is our last monthly meeting until we reconvene in September.

It will be a brief meeting to update and familiarize our members with our new meeting application.

Don't fear ZOOM ! If you haven't done so already, you may go to their website for an easy tutorial. You will feel like you are on the opening clip of The Brady Bunch, with all participants shown. Bad hair day ? You may turn off your selfie camera and still participate. You will see two yellow links below- one is the meeting ID and the other is a password. These change for all future meetings and you will get an emailed invitation every month with new links. You may just copy/ paste them in the correct box to Join A Meeting.

Our future monthly meetings will be in this online format which will allow our chapter members to attend without having to travel far and drive at night.

We still will try to plan some field trips, a holiday party and other live get-togethers. This will also allow members who live far away to attend and get ISA education credits for your re-qualification.

Zoom works on computers, smart phones and smart pads in both Apple and Android operating systems.

Please go to ZOOM.US to get started.

Some helpful ZOOM guidelines:

*BE ON TIME - This will be a shorter meeting, and following meeting will be about an hour long with 30 minutes early to socialize

*RAISE YOUR HAND if you want to be recognized by moderator. Current speakers box will light up on the screen

* WE CAN SEE YOU, so please no PJs ( Fred Winer).

* BYOB ;-)

 NCAC ISA Virtual Meeting

 Mon, Mar 9, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM (EDT)

When it's not a Masterpiece: Appraising Fine Art in the Middle Market

Steve Roach, JD, ISA CAPP

Steve will present specific examples of European and American works of art that have sold at auction over the past several years as case studies to illustrate understand factors to consider when selecting comparables for works valued at $5,000 to $150,000. We'll explore how a work's condition, quality, subject matter and overall desirability can be viewed through the lens of the art market to help you support a value conclusion. We'll also consider how to present this analysis in plain language so that an intended user can understand your reasoning and hopefully, call you again to help with the "nice painting over the fireplace."

Steve is a co-instructor of ISA's Fine Arts course and an instructor of 7-hour and 15-hour USPAP classes.

This meeting will be held on the Go To Meeting format. Please respond to the email I sent around to the members for more information on how to attend.

The Zoom Meeting on 5/4/2020 was a success!

Thanks to those of you who could attend our online ISA-NCAC chapter meeting tonight. It was nice to see everyone.

First of all we give our deepest thanks to Carol Silverman as she steps down as President, effective tonight. Carol has been our leading representative for many years, and we appreciate everything she has done during her tenure.

Our current VP, Dale Sorenson said he wasn't interested in stepping into the role, so Carol asked me to temporarily fill in as President until we have an election for our new Board of Directors in November.

Our monthly meeting will continue to be online with Zoom, which will make it much easier for attendees. We will be sending the ISA a report of attendees so ISA members can get their requalification credits.

Future NCAC meeting will be much like our dinner meetings with a period of time for socializing at 6:30 then a set time ( 7 PM) to have our featured presenter.

An emailed reminder will be sent within a week of the meeting with a meeting name/number password attached.
You simply open ZOOM.com and Sign In To Join A Meeting,
and type in the two codes in the invitation

A reminder will also be posted on our Facebook NCAC page.

New to Zoom ? We will host a dry run/ tutorial meeting next Monday May 11 at 7 PM.
Watch your email for an invitation to chat online.
See you soon-
